If you continue to order a Philly Cheesesteak out at Penn Station or similar restaurants, you can now make your own Philly Cheesesteaks at home when the craving hits. These are made in one pan and on the table in under 20 minutes!
Yesterday we brought you our Smoked Brisket recipe and today….we bring you these Philly Cheesesteaks! I feel like we get in a rut once I perfect a recipe and seriously just make it over and over because it’s asked for so often. Like my Shrimp and Chicken Alfredo Recipe, just yesterday TT and Jay were teaming up asking me to make it for dinner even though we already have our Meal Plan for the week!
Do you meal plan? If so, let me know in the comments what some of your go to recipes are! I’d love to hear to help switch it up in our house! Anyway, these Philly Cheesesteaks are a rotation in our house. Jay and I will eat these bad boys when the kids aren’t here or when I need something quick to entertain friends with.
This Philly Cheesesteak recipe is made in a larger skillet, toasted in the air fryer or oven and on your dinner table in under 30 minutes. Be sure to check out the video tutorial below and see why I love creating this recipe a few times a month!
What is on a real Philly cheesesteak?
A traditional Philly Cheesesteak typically consists of chopped rib eye steak, cheese and served on a hoagie roll.
Over the years the Philly Cheesesteak has been adapted in various versions consisting of:
- mushrooms
- melty cheddar cheese
- bell peppers
What cut of beef should I use when making a Philly Cheesesteak?
Over the past few years I have made it various ways. For cooking time and not having to trim steak down, I prefer the shaved steak that is in the grocery store. It makes my life easier.
However, if you don’t have the option for shaved steak you can buy a rib eye or similar cut of meat like a flank steak. Using a super sharp kitchen knife you can shave the steak down. A tip when doing it this way is to freeze your steak for 15-20 minutes to make the cutting process a little bit easier.
Does Philly cheesesteak have sauce on it?
In my opinion, there are two types of Philly Cheesesteaks.
- Cheesesteak with melty cheese sauce
- Traditional provolone cheese slices
In our house, we don’t use processed foods. Sure I could totally make a liquid cheese sauce, but, I just don’t enjoy cheesesteaks with that type of cheese. Therefore, I choose to go with slices of Provolone cheese on our Philly Cheesesteaks!
What are the two best cheesesteaks in Philly?
I have personally never been to Philly, but I have heard from others who have that Geno’s is the place to go. They use that melty nacho cheese type sauce on their Philly Cheesesteaks and apparently it’s legit!
As for a second place to go in Philly for the best cheesesteaks I’ve heard:
- Cosmi’s Deli
- Philip’s Steaks
- Oregon Steaks
- Tony Luke’s
What ingredients are in a Philly Cheesesteak?
In our veresion of the Philly Cheesesteak you will find:

- Onions
- Mushrooms
- Provolone Cheese
- Mayo
How do I make a Philly Cheesesteak at home?
It’s honestly way easier to make a Philly Cheesesteak at home than what you might think.
In a large skillet, heat olive oil with onions. You want to sautee them on medium low heat until they become soft and translucent. I choose to do sliced onion, but you can totally dice them up as well!
Once the onions have sauteed add in the mushrooms. Be sure to season both the onions and mushrooms with salt. This helps to bring the moisture out of them and become soft. Not to mention, they need the flavor.
Once the mushrooms have broken down and soft (they will turn a darker color) add in the shaved steak along with 2-3 tablespoons of your favorite steak seasoning. I’ve been obsessed with our local butchers steak seasoning (we try to support local as much as we can!) as well as the Texas Inspired Seasoning that I pick up at Kroger.
Cook the steak until it’s cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Make sure to toss the steak around in the onions and mushrooms.
Grab your hoagie buns and place mayo on both sides of the bread. Put as much or as little on as you’d like. Jay likes his with light mayo while I prefer mine to have mayo on both sides of the bread, it’s totally your call.
Place steak on top of the bottom roll and the provolone cheese on top. Place in an air fryer on 350° (or the oven) to toast the bread and melt the cheese. In the air fryer it’s about 1-2 minutes and for the oven expect 5-8 minutes.
Serve with homemade french fries, chips or if on a keto or low carb diet I serve mine over a bed of lettuce!
